Praise for Dan Buettner and the Blue Zones

About 15 years ago, National Geographic Fellow Dan Buettner identified the places around the world where people live the longest and he drew a blue line around each area. He discovered specific dietary habits that people in those Blue Zones had in common, and developed this cookbook filled with recipes inspired by those locations: Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan and Loma Linda, California. Food is a great way to get to know a culture, and these stories and photos will whet your appetite. Now is an ideal time to try these recipes; if you live to be 100, you just may get to visit all five places in person.

I coined the term “blue zones” to describe the places on Earth where people live the longest and healthiest lives.

But I certainly didn’t create the places themselves, and they have a lot to teach us.

I know that the titular word Secrets is a bit loaded — can something still be a “secret” once you’ve published it? — but I still think that’s exactly the right word. This book’s teachings on how to live longer are like any other “open secrets” in that…

People living in the blue zones are just as human as us, and their health advice touches on many familiar themes: purpose, faith, community, rest, exercise, healthy diet, and so on. But blue-zoners don’t struggle nearly so much as us to make all of those factors work harmoniously, and it makes an enviable difference: they live 10+ years longer on average, and they’re healthier all the way from cradle to grave.

This book will introduce you to the world’s half-dozen blue zones (including a new addition, the first man-made blue zone!), show you their healthy practices in action, and teach you how to replicate them at home. And thanks to my colleagues David McLain and Gianluca Cola—two of the best photographers from National Geographic—you’ll actually be able to see some of the blue zones’ magic via the book’s numerous full-color photos.

Praise for Dan Buettner and the Blue Zones

Dan Buettner possesses an uncanny ability to develop a novel idea, do deep research, and produce new insights and evidence
on health and longevity.

Dan Buettner is a National Geographic Fellow, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of six books on longevity and happiness, and a three-time Guinness World Record distance cycling holder.

Dan discovered the five places in the world—dubbed Blue Zones—where people lived the longest, healthiest lives and shared this information with the world. His books, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way, The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World’s Healthiest People, and The Blue Zones of Happiness were all national bestsellers. His New York Times best-selling book, The Blue Zones Kitchen: 100 recipes for living to 100, fuses scientific reporting, National Geographic photography, and 100 recipes that may help you live to 100. His book, The Blue Zones Challenge, was written to help you get started on the path to a longer, healthier, happier life with this quick start to building your own Blue Zones lifestyle. In addition to his best-selling books, his articles about the Blue Zones in The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic are two of the most popular for both publications.

Dan has appeared on The Today Show, Oprah, NBC Nightly News, and Good Morning America. He has keynoted speeches at TEDMED and Google Zeitgeist. In January 2018, he was chosen as “One of the Best of Davos” at the Davos World Economic Forum.

When he is not writing about the Blue Zones, he works in partnership with municipal governments, large employers, and health insurance companies to implement Blue Zones Projects in communities, workplaces, and universities. Blue Zones Projects are well-being initiatives that apply Blue Zones lessons to entire communities by focusing on changes to the local environment, public policy, and social networks. To date, the program has dramatically improved the health of more than 5 million Americans.

If he is not writing, talking about, or helping implement the Blue Zones way, you will find him living it.

[Dan Buettner's] list of staples shows that eating foods linked to longevity doesn’t require a big food budget or living near a grocery market filled with all the latest-and-greatest products. The key is eating a plant-forward diet and whole grains—all foods you can find no matter where in the world you live.
